The data accumulated in the service will enable the launch of many new features over the next few years. Feedback from learners and higher education institutions is the guiding principle of development.
The Opin.fi service, launched in the spring, is currently being refined to make it even smoother. This work is part of the next phase of the Digivisio project, launched in the autumn.
“After the first half of 2026, we will again have new interesting features for learners to use,” estimates Leena Latva-Rasku, Main Product Owner coordinating the development of the service.
In the future, learners can better tailor Opin.fi to match their preferences and find anything that interests them by a quick glance at the service. Higher education institutions, on the other hand, can use analytics and make knowledge-based decisions.
All this is made possible by the data collected in the Opin.fi service. The use of data is always subject to consent: learners can choose which data can be used by selecting cookies, for example.
“We strive to be very transparent,” summarises Kati Kurssi, Product Owner responsible for the further development of Opin.fi.
Lowering the threshold for learning as much as possible
New features are made available especially to users identified in the Opin.fi service. They can soon get help from artificial intelligence with planning their learning path or create a search alert that notifies them of new interesting studies, for instance.
Content that encourages informal learning will also be added to the service, such as blogs and podcasts, as well as micro-credentials. This lowers the threshold for increasing competence and helps learners select the best solutions for this.
“As the world of work is undergoing a tremendous transformation, it does not always make sense to complete a multi-year degree. Instead, even smaller study modules can bring significant benefits,” Latva-Rasku points out.
Higher education institutions, on the other hand, receive information on the search terms learners use when browsing the Opin.fi service, which contents are popular there and more. This helps them plan their offering and cooperation.
“The more data we manage to collect, the more it benefits higher education institutions,” Kurssi summarises.
New features are launched at a higher pace
The further development of the Opin.fi service by Digivisio will take place between 2025 and 2027. The work will progress from refining the current features toward launching new ones and adding finishing touches.
A continuous publication model has been introduced this autumn. It means that new features will be added into the service quicker. However, it is ensured that parties have enough time to prepare for the changes.
“If the new features require higher education institutions to make changes to their systems or operating methods, they will be agreed upon separately,” Latva-Rasku emphasises.
Expanding the offering is also an important part of the further development of Opin.fi. In 2026, open studies provided by all higher education institutions will be introduced to the service, and the network offerings will be expanded further.
However, not all development ideas are immediately addressed: for instance, higher education institutions have outlined that the introduction of continuing education into the service and the possibility of registering for and paying for open studies will be promoted no earlier than in 2027.
Our work is guided by the wishes of learners and higher education institutions
Our future development work is guided by a shared vision of higher education institutions and feedback collected through the Opin.fi service. Learners may submit their development ideas in the service. A similar opportunity is also available to higher education institutions.
“We will see which issues are mentioned repeatedly and which questions arise about the service,” says Latva-Rasku.
Higher education institutions’ own actions will also play a key role in the future. It is particularly important to improve the quality of data, such as the descriptions of studies. This will allow any new AI and analytics services to work properly.
“The more consistently the higher education institutions describe their offerings, the easier it is for the learner to compare different offerings,” says Kurssi.
Digivisio and higher education institutions’ work to further develop the Opin.fi service benefits society in many ways. It prevents the accumulation of education of the same level and helps raise the level of competence – it also promotes the idea that higher education is more than just degree studies.
“Learning can be really fast and start small,” says Latva-Rasku.
