The digital services developed in the Digivisio 2030 project will produce a wide range of data and information for institutions of higher education to use. Different institutions have varying capabilities and wishes for how the data produced in these services are to be used. The preliminary study on knowledge-based management examines the current methods of using data in institutions of higher education, expectations related to knowledge-based management, and the needs for developing knowledge-based management. The study was limited to information on learning and studying produced in Digivisio’s continuous and flexible learning tray.
The material for the preliminary study was collected using an online survey and by conducting group interviews with experts from higher education institutions. A total of 33 higher education institutions responded to the survey examining the current state of knowledge-based management in higher education institutions as well as expectations of how Digivisio can support knowledge-based management in higher education institutions in the future.
Data generated in the services to be used by higher education institutions
According to the preliminary study, institutions of higher education utilise knowledge-based management extensively at different levels of their organisation. Although the prerequisites for knowledge-based management in higher education institutions are very different, the need to move towards more proactive analytics is a common denominator. Key issues included better understanding of learners’ behaviour and choices as well as developing teaching, guidance and activities based on this understanding to better meet learners’ needs.
As the continuous and flexible learning tray is developed in stages, the amount of data accumulated in the service will increase along the way. During the first stage, the first pilot on non-formal educational offering in higher education institutions produces data that are then included in the tray. As more pilots are implemented, the increasing offering and number of learners using the tray will provide higher education institutions with new kinds of data, for example, on the behaviour of learners on the tray and the kinds of content that higher education institutions produce for the tray. Institutions of higher education are hoping to be able to use the data in the future, for example, to develop guidance and educational offering for learners.
Digivisio promotes knowledge-based activities
The Digivisio project will use the preliminary study to develop knowledge-based management from the perspective of users. In the future, knowledge may be used within the institutions of higher education by an extremely diverse group of people with varying needs and capabilities for using knowledge. The Digivisio project promotes the concept of knowledge-based activities, which is already being used more extensively in higher education institutions. The development work for the continuous and flexible learning tray enables the sharing of data with higher education institutions through interfaces. At a later stage, the aim is to be able to share data in the interface in an already analysed form. The perspectives and expectations of higher education institutions that emerged in the preliminary study contribute for their part in the development of the continuous and flexible learning tray.
